You’ll forgive me if this week’s post is a little emotional. It’s just that we’ve had the thing for 17 years. And yes, I know it’s just a fridge but its purchase represented a major step forward for us on the road to adulthood. It felt so grown-up to be picking out an appliance. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve cleaned it over the years and I can still remember the first time my son reached up to tug on the handle as a toddler. Over the years it’s been opened and peered into thousands of times.
But it was time for it to go. When we moved into this place, there was already a fridge in the kitchen. It cramped an already tight garage. It wasn’t working reliably 100% of the time. But the biggest reason of all was I’d started to suspect that our food bills were so high because we were buying for two fridges (we have the room!) and then forgetting about the food in the garage fridge and throwing half of it out because it had spoiled. It was time for the old fridge to go.
And yes, when they showed up to take it away, I understood what every one of my clients feels whenever it’s time for something they’ve had for a while to go.
I was sad to see it go.
