Do I have to do homework?

When we work together, we’re working for a solid three hours at a time. You’re making tons of decisions and getting lots done. I know that it’s tempting to ask me for homework, but the reality is, life is super busy and until we’ve really got a handle on the clutter, it’s still overwhelming.

If I give you a task to do and you don’t get to it, you may feel embarrassed and ashamed, two emotions which don’t help anyone get organized. So no, I don’t assign homework in between our sessions. All I ask you to do is to notice and enjoy the progress you’ve made.

That being said, it’s been interesting for me to observe that as a project progresses, clients will often start to tell me they started working on a closet or a drawer or a pile of papers in between our sessions. It’s exciting to see how the skills we’ve been working on together get transferred this way, and how the whole idea of tackling clutter and finding the right homes for the keepers becomes less daunting over time.

So no, I don’t assign homework but you may find yourself spontaneously giving yourself homework. And as long as it doesn’t become a source of stress for you, that’s awesome!
