Do you hold onto boxes?
“Of course I do. I need those boxes to put the TV/the VCR/the Wii in when we move.” You know, I’ve moved 16 times in 25 years and we’ve never, ever repacked our electronics in their original boxes. It’s worth holding onto the box for a couple weeks until you’re sure you won’t need to return the equipment, but after that the odds are you won’t be reusing that box.
“D’you think boxes grown on trees? If I ever move again, I’m going to need these.” Did I mention that I’ve moved 16 times in 25 years? After a few moves, I realized that the universe is full of free moving boxes. Craigslist and Freecycle are wonderful sources.
“Look, I’m using them to store things.” After you’ve decluttered those boxes, please, please consider transferring what’s left to more durable storage. Water damage is absolutely devastating for cardboard boxes and their contents.
“You know, I might not need all these boxes after all. But they’re really good boxes! What can I do with them?” Lots of choices! Recycle them, post them on Freecycle or Craigslist, or fill them with donations and drop them off at Goodwill.
