Looking back at birthday presents over the years, how many really felt like gifts? Were you itching to blow out the candles on your cake so you could finally get your hands on those spelling workbooks and guides to improving your algebra? As you got older did you look forward to the pile of diet or gourmet cookbooks and the unsolicited parenting DVDs? The guide to make-up techniques for the “older woman”?
Many gifts carry the unspoken message that you’re not good enough. And if someone gives you a gift certificate for organizing, it can seem like a not-so-subtle way of telling you that you’re a messy slob who needs to get your act together and soon.
Getting organized is a really personal thing. We work side-by-side and process things you many never have shown anyone else. I offer a free 30 minute consultation before we even start talking about scheduling sessions because I know it’s crucial that the fit between us is right. There’s an organizer for each person and if I’m not your organizer, let’s get you connected with someone you’ll click with.
So 10 times out of 10, a gift certificate for organizing is a bad idea and that’s why I don’t offer them. However, if you know someone who’d like to work with me and you’d like to help pay for their sessions, ask the person to call me, we’ll schedule their free consultation and if they’d like to go ahead, let’s talk about how you can help pay for that.
A no-strings-attached gift is always the very best one of all and if a special person in your life is excited to work with me, then both they and I will thank you for helping make that happen.
Do you feel like you missed the day they taught Organizing 101?
