Back in July 2014, Send it away Saturday made its debut in the Longmont Times-Call newspaper and it’s been featured monthly ever since. The column runs on the second Saturday of the month and it’s for everybody out there who isn’t naturally organized.
Most articles, books and blog posts on organizing are aimed squarely at those Flylady calls Born Organized. They stay on top of their clutter quite naturally and they love articles, books and blog posts with titles like 467 Ways to Declutter Your Home.
They roll up their sleeves and get to work when presented with an Instagram graphic suggesting you can Organize Your Home in 30 Days. They don’t blanche when Day 1 is “Organize Your Kitchen.” Somehow their brains know how to break that mammoth task down without further assistance.
This blog is for the rest of us. It’s for you if you’re continually confounded by the state of your home. If you get overwhelmed whenever you try to tackle the mess. If you have boxes you’ve moved several times without opening them, and the hardest thing of all is deciding how to deal with sentimental items that bring back floods of memories.
Send it away Saturday asks you to find one thing to declutter each Saturday. Just one and then we’re done. It can be anything from a piece of junk mail to a car that’s never going to come off the blocks again.
Over the years I’ve gotten hundreds of calls and emails from Times-Call readers who’ve taken up the Send it away Saturday challenge. They tell me what they sent away this Saturday and I cheer them on.
They’ve let go of everything from prom dresses to utility bills from the Seventies. They’ve told me how doing something they didn’t think could possibly make that much of a difference has changed the way they live. It’s mended relationships. It’s made them realize they may not be Born Organized but they can still live in a clutter free home that works for them.

Don’t try to declutter more than one thing a week. Send it away Saturday is all about calming your brain down so you can make good decisions.
