Curious about hoarding?

If you wonder if you or a loved one might be what they call a “hoarder,” an excellent way to dig deeper is to check out the Online Hoarding Conference. Presented by the International OCD Foundation, this year’s online conference is on August 7th and 8th. These sessions aren’t recorded (for privacy’s sake) which is why I’m giving you this heads up.

Who is this conference for?

Because so many people are interested in this subject for different reasons, there are three conference tracks:

  • Lived Experience, for people who struggle with managing stuff
  • Family and Supporters
  • Professionals who work with people affected by hoarding disorder

If this were an in-person conference, you might wistfully wish you could attend all the classes on every track. Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, you can do just that!

You can join a session from one track, realize it’s not quite what you were looking for and hop on over to another session in a different track that’s running at the same time. Or as they put it, “All registrants will have access to all sessions. The CE-eligible Sessions are intended for professionals who work with hoarding disorder, but everyone can participate.”

Day 1: August 7th

The conference opens with a general session for everyone, called Hoarding: The Basics. It’s presented by Gail Steketee and Randy Frost, and if you only attend that one session, you’ll still get your money’s worth. It’s like signing up for an art class and finding out the instructors are Picasso and Van Gogh. These presenters know from hoarding.

Here are links to all the details:

The day ends with a screening of Beyond Hoarding. I saw this powerful documentary at last year’s conference and I can’t wait to watch it again. If all you’ve seen is A&E Hoarders, you’ll want to see this nuanced and sensitive look at how hoarding affects people and communities.

Day 2: August 8th

The second day features the latest hoarding research. The conference ends with sessions on digital hoarding.

Good to know: I’m not an affiliate (for this or anything else) and have no vested interest in you attending this conference. I just think you’ll love it and find it helpful.

Thank you for reading and sharing,

Worried about how much stuff you have? I can help.

  1. Steketee and Frost are pioneers in this field and I love your nod relating them to Picasso and Van Gogh. I’ve heard them speak several times at ICD conferences and they are so knowledgable. This sounds like an incredible conference. While I don’t serve the hoarding population, your description of the conference makes me want to attend. Thank you for letting me know about it.

  2. I don’t work with people with hoarding disorders, but as a Certified Professional Organizer, I know my fellow CPOs are always looking for good CEUs. And OhMyGoodness, it’s Steketee & Frost, the gold standard in hoarding research. Even I am tempted! Thank you so much for sharing!
